Abstract:: This collection contains biographical information about Michael John Carley (Brown University Class of 1962), who was killed in action (KIA 670227) while copiloting a helicopter mission in the Vietnam War. Carley had flown 320 missions, entitling him to 16 Air Medals. A large part of the collection is in the form of an oral history and other recollections by his widow, Connie Worthington (Brown University/Pembroke Class of 1968). Worthington talks about their days as students at Brown University, Carley’s pilot training, his experiences in Vietnam and his memorial services, as part of the Vietnam Oral History Collections. There are also recollections about Mike Carley from his U.S.M.C. comrades from military-related sources and from a reunion with Connie, son Michael Carley, Jr. and the surviving members of Mike Carley's [Sr.] squadron. Includes a published book by Mike's brother, Richard Carley, titled "Growing up on the farm: a Sharon Mountain story" which includes historical recollections of the town of Sharon, Connecticut, and a remembrance of Mike.

Abstract:: This collection is contains an oral history interview of James K. Gardner (Class of 1965) by Professor Elizabeth Taylor on January 28, 2011 as part of the Vietnam Veteran's oral history project at Brown University. In the interview he relates his memories of Brown University during his undergraduate and graduate school days, noting how thing changed from 1965 to 1968. A majority of the interview focuses on his experiences as a Lieutenant in the Navy's Civil Engineer Corps before and during his assignment to Vietnam and the war. During the war he served in the Military Assistance Command, Vietnam – Studies and Observations Group (MACV-SOG), a highly classified, multi-service United States special operations unit which, among other things, conducted covert unconventional warfare operations prior to and during the Vietnam War. A survey of questions to prompt James K. Gardner's memory include his initial responses, amended by Prof. Taylor with notes relevant to the question selected from the interview.

Abstract:: This collections contains materials about the life of Geoffrey Charles Getman (Class of 1965) and his service in the Army during the Vietnam War. The materials were collected as part of the Vietnam Veterans Archive project by Professor Beth Taylor. Getman trained as an Infantry Captain, but after receiving serious wounds in January 1968, recovering, and receiving a purple heart, was assigned to desk jobs thereafter. His last position in Vietnam was as XO of LRRP company E/20 LRRP (Long Range Recon Patrols) / 75th Infantry (Rangers) Regiment where he handled army administration and logistics. He extended his tour to become an R&R Liaison Officer, spending the last 100 days of 1969 as the MACV liaison officer at the R&R Center in Honolulu. He was discharged as a Captain in March 1970. This collection contains a brief biography of Geoffrey Getman written posthumously by his sister, Susan Getman Abernathy, and her recollections of her brother’s feelings and her role in anti-war efforts, during the Vietnam War era. There is also a communication describing his military and civilian life that Geoffrey Getman sent in 2003 to his OCS classmates via email as they were reuniting in the virtual world, state-side. There are two photographs of Getman in his dress uniform circa 1967.

Abstract:: This collection is primarily information from the interview of Barry Kowalski, Class of 1966 by Professor Beth Taylor of Brown University for the Vietnam Veterans Archive collection. The interview was by telephone, on February 21, 2011. The interview draws on Barry Kowalski’s recollections of his years at Brown (1962 to 1966, graduating with a B.A. in Political Science), and his military training and experiences in Vietnam. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in the fall of 1966, and attended the Officer Candidate School in Quantico, Virginia before receiving his commission. He wanted a non-combat position as a transport, communications, or supply officer—Military Operations Specialists (MOS), but he and his whole class were given commissions as infantry officers. He was in Vietnam from November 1967 - Summer 1968. Barry was stationed at Camp Lejeune, N.C. for his second and final year of service. There are some recollections about his return to the United States during the war era. In 1973, Barry earned his JD from Catholic University Law School. Since 1980, he has been a lawyer for the Criminal Section of the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice. He has helped prosecute cases including the Rodney King beating and the last Department of Justice investigation of the Martin Luther King Assassination.

Abstract:: Theodore S. Sienicki recorded information about his service during the Vietnam War in response to questions posed by John F. "Jay" Barry (Class of 1950), Associate Editor of the Brown Alumni Monthly. The recording was made in July 1973, four months after Sienicki had returned home from being a prisoner of war in North Vietnam. This collection contains the transcription of that recording and the article published in the Brown Alumni Monthly based on it by Jay Barry. Sienicki tells the story of his Air Force career as the weapons systems operator in an F-4 fighter-bomber based in Thailand doing bombing missions over North Vietnam. He was shot down and captured on May 3, 1972 and held as a prisoner of war in the Hanoi Hilton prison camp in Hanoi, Vietnam for 11 months until March 28, 1973.

Abstract:: Terry Uyeyama was interviewed in 1973 by John F. Barry (Class of 1950), Associate Editor of the Brown Alumni Monthly. This collection contains the transcription of that interview and the article published in the Brown Alumni Monthly based on the interview. His interview tells the story of his Air Force career, service as an F-4 fighter pilot in Vietnam starting in October 1967, his capture by North Vietnamese in March 1968 and experiences as a prisoner of war in the Hanoi Hilton prison camp in Hanoi, Vietnam for almost 5 years until January 1973.
